In fact , in the first 5 minutes Beard was called into
action twice and a good short corner routine saw a well
struck shot whistle past the upright as our visitors
started well. Call it a wake up call if you wish but we
managed to get into the game after that, and despite
being outnumbered in the centre of midfield both Acland
& especially Baillie started to get to grips with things
in there and we blossomed as result. The pair of them
had the first Woodbridge chances with Baillie firing
over from outside of the box and then Acland running
onto a Baldry pass to shoot but the goalbound effort was
deflected just wide. We were making good ground out wide
and a number of crosses both both flanks saw a number of
half chances go begging but we took the lead midway
through the first half when Smy spun his marker, ghosted
past him and drew the keeper before firing a great
little shot from a tight angle into the bottom right
hand corner. It was a great finish from a lad showing
some great form of late and it gave us the spur to
continue to attack and with our tails up it was no
surprise to see chances come aplenty.
A quick Acland free-kick saw Smy head
wide when well placed soon after, and then a series of
saves from ex-Woodpecker Adam Dawson saw him keep his
team in the game stopping a thunderbolt from Thickett
from long-range, a snap-shot from the right which fell
to Baldry who put it over and another fine stop when
Baillie was sent clear one on one. In addition to this
Seaman had headed wide from a corner, Thickett had
flicked one just wide from another corner and Baldry
again sent the ball over the bar when he had linked with
Seaman. At the other end we had restricted our visitors
to shots from outside the box but the ever dangerous
Mackenzie had 2 chances to pull his team level but fired
over when sent through with Caraccio doing well to put
him under pressure at the crucial time and Beard saving
well when he had managed to get half a yard to fire in a
shot just before halftime. However we were pegged back
right on halftime when Mackenzie came out on top in a
battle with Thickett in the far corner and his cross was
met with a header which just crept over the line via the
underside of the bar and Beard’s attempts to get his
hands onto it.
Rather than feel sorry for themselves,
we came out in the second half with the same vigour as
we had shown in the first and we were back creating
chances. Seaman headed against the post in the first few
minutes but another good header from him from an Acland
corner put us back infront within 8 minutes of the
re-start. Mackenzie was thwarted at the other end before
Smith showed us why he is so dangerous when he collected
the ball in our box before setting off jet-propelled
down to the Felixstowe box before Dawson dived low to
save his shot. It was a terrific run at some speed and
deserved a goal. Beard again stood up well to another
Mackenzie effort who looked their best chance of getting
back into the game, whilst we again kept Dawson busy
with Baillie striking well for Dawson to tip round for a
corner which was then subsequently headed against the
bar by Baillie with Smy backheeling the rebound which
Dawson had to dive on top of before it ran over the
line.
Soon after another fine run this time
from skipper Baldry saw him ghost past 3 players,
rounding Dawson but his tame effort was hacked off the
line by the defender but we managed to get some daylight
between us when another strong Baillie run from deep saw
him advance before slipping in Smy who turn and thrashed
the ball home for his second of the game. Roots and
Booth came on in place of Baillie and Seaman but our
impetus did not dwindle. Not long after, another run
this time from left back Hammond saw Baldry again round
Dawson but this time he found the side-netting. His
frustration was not to last though as Smith won the ball
back near the dugouts on the right before storming
forward to find his captain who this time finished with
aplomb.
It was good game of football between 2
good sides with Woodbridge thoroughly deserving of the
win on the night with a show of real passion, teamwork
and determination across the whole pitch and some
quality work on the ball. Caraccio and Thickett again
performed well at the heart of the defence keeping
Mackenzie as quiet as possible with both Culf and
Hammond supporting well from fullback. The pace and
threat of Smith and Seaman outwide was as crucial as the
guile and craft of Bailie and Acland on the night with
the front pairing of Baldry and Smy showing signs once
again of a terrific partnership.
Woodbridge Town: Beard, Culf, Hammond, Baillie (Roots),
Caraccio, Thickett, Smith, Acland, Baldry, Smy, Seaman
(Booth).
