WALSHAM LE WILLOWS 3 WOODBRIDGE TOWN 5 |
| Thursday 16th April 2009 |
|
Woodbridge Town Under 18s ensured the
destiny of the Central Division Championship will go to
their last game at Debenham after an impressive away
victory at Walsham Le Willows on Thursday. |
| . |
For the 3rd successive game in this hectic
fixture schedule, there were 11 changes to the starting
eleven & the fresh legs paid dividends as Woodbridge
came flying out of the blocks with 2 goals inside the
opening 8 minutes. JACK LAWRENCE was the scorer of both
early goals converting Jack Severy’s cross, following a
flowing passing move & then latching onto Matt
Rutterford’s through ball to score. Lawrence was only
denied a hat-trick goal inside 25 minutes courtesy of a
debatable foul awarded against him.
There were other half chances for Lawrence, Severy &
Jordan Seaman, but towards half-time Walsham began to
assert some pressure of their own & only a terrific
goal-line clearance from David Kempson ensured
Woodbridge reached the interval 2-0 ahead.
The lead was halved within 5 minutes of the restart when
a Walsham free-kick evaded the grasp of Nathan Allison &
nestled in the top corner. However, Woodbridge responded
immediately as Matt Rutterford forced the keeper into a
flying save & Ross Hutchings rattled the crossbar from
30 yards before Severy dispossessed the Walsham right
back & delivered a precise cross to the near post, which
was headed in by JACK LAWRENCE, to complete his
hat-trick. Leading goal-scorer, JORDAN SEAMAN, increased
his tally of league goals to 16 (from 11 games),
courtesy of 2 headed goals as Danny Tatum & Hutchings
delivered inviting crosses.
With 10 minutes remaining & with the game seemingly dead
Walsham pulled a goal back with a neat finish at the far
post & then grabbed a 3rd goal, after seizing on a stray
pass & finding the net from 20 yards.
Team: Nathan Allison, Ryan Stafford, Adam Sturman, Ross
Hutchings, David Kempson, James Fulker (Henry Cage 71),
Matt Rutterford (Ashley Holmes 71), Danny Tatum, Jordan
Seaman, Jack Lawrence & Jack Severy (James Churchill 71)
Manager, Sean Thacker, was delighted with the
performance & looked forward to an exciting week;
“It was spelt out clearly to the players not only the
need to play at a good tempo, but also the importance of
working hard when Walsham had the ball, which is an area
where have fallen short recently. The response & the
attitude of the players was outstanding & with the
exception of the last 10 minutes of both halves, this
was a performance which ticked just about every box”.
“We go to Debenham on the back of 3 good way wins since
they beat us a fortnight ago During these games we’ve
scored 21 goals so despite the fact that only a victory
can earn us the championship although even a win would
still mean Debenham could pip us by recording a large
victory over Hadleigh in their final game), we will
approach the game in confident mood & in good
goal-scoring form.”
“Unfortunately, a number of the lads will be unable to
play at Debenham on Monday as they have a school cup
semi-final the same afternoon, but regardless of the
outcome, we can then look forward to our Ridgeons Youth
Cup semi-final versus Braintree on Thursday.
