Having dominated the early play it was no surprise when
Woodbridge took a 14th minute lead when JACK SEVERY
supplied a right-footed half-volley to round off good
approach play from Ted Nichols & Craig Jennings. JACK
SEVERY doubled the lead two minutes later, this time
with his more natural left-foot after Adam Dawson & Sam
Lewis had initiated a counter-attack.
David Kempson had the simplest of
chances to add a third goal, but somehow volleyed wide
of an open goal before Walsham winger, Jon Sparkes,
demonstrated his undoubted quality on the half hour,
evading 3 tackles to score a terrific individual goal.
However, the main threat was always at the other end
with Sean Rea going the closest to adding to the
goal-scoring with a 25 yarder that dipped just over.
Walsham enjoyed more territory at the start of the 2nd
half, but it was Woodbridge who grabbed the next goal, &
in controversial surroundings, as Jennings was deemed to
have been fouled, much to the surprise of many, but SEAN
REA took no pity & made amends for his missed penalty in
the home fixture last month by slotting home.
On 77 minutes, CRAIG JENNINGS prodded
in Severy’s corner & in doing so marked a terrific
season with his 20th goal of the season (& in only his
13th appearance) to secure his place as leading
goal-scorer in the Central Division!
Walsham replied almost immediately
with a terrific strike from the edge of our penalty area
that went in off the underside of Dawson’s crossbar, but
the 3 goal lead was restored when CRAIG JENNINGS was in
the right place to convert Severy’s teasing cross in the
dying minutes to take his league total to 21 goals
(exactly one/third of all our league goals!). However,
it was Man of the Match, JACK SEVERY, who deservedly had
the last word, taking Danny Tatum’s through ball &
firing across the keeper into the bottom corner to
complete his hat-trick & register Woodbridge’s 6th goal
of the evening.
Team: Dawson, Lewis (Holmes 68), Rahman, Stafford,
Widdowson, Nicholls, Rea (Peck 68), Kempson (Churchill
68), Jennings, Tatum & Severy.
The match signalled the end of Under 18 football for
both Ted Nichols & Carl Widdowson, who have already
progressed into reserve team regulars & next Thursday
should be a special evening for some of the other 2nd
years (Ben Garnham, Sam Lewis, Sean Rea, Luke Read, Mo
Rahman & Ben Seaman) as they play their final Under 18
game when we host league-leaders, Brentwood in a
specially-rearranged Eastern Junior Alliance fixture.
