Woodbridge Under 18s recorded their 1st Eastern Junior Alliance victory since September courtesy of a last-gasp goal from Danny Tatum, which saw them edge past Chelmsford City.

Fielding a complete team of Under 17s Woodbridge started the brighter & Severy saw a cross-shot come back off the bar before the home team took a 15th minute lead. It was an ‘untypical Woodbridge’ goal as Lewis Rhodes goal kick cleared the whole Chelmsford defence & JACK SEVERY raced through to beat the keeper with a left-footed shot.
The lead lasted merely 5 minutes as Chelmsford worked their way past Martin Bultitude on their left & Jonjo Hood-Wright was beaten to the cross by a visiting forward, who powered a close range shot past Rhodes.
Woodbridge regained the lead on the stroke of half-time when Daniel Morphew picked up a wayward clearance from the visiting keeper & played in BEN HUTTON & for once the linesman’s flag stayed down & Hutton rifled his shot into the roof of the net. There was still time before the interval for Severy to stake a claim for ‘Miss of the Season’ as he shot wide of a gaping net after more strong work from Morphew.

The 2nd half saw a lacklustre performance from the home team while Chelmsford enjoyed a greater share of possession & played with more urgency & purpose. It was no surprise when they levelled the scores again with 20 minutes remaining following a shot which was initially saved by Rhodes only for the rebound to be fired back past him.
At this stage it looked more likely that the visitors would go on to win the game & they missed two excellent chances before Woodbridge provided the sting in the tail with a 90th minute winner when Severy knocked a long ball down into the path of DANNY TATUM & his low drive was too powerful for the keeper & nestled in the back of the net.

The victory was soured at the death when substitute Ross Nicklin was guilty of an x-rated tackle, which left his opponent in a bad way & he was fortunate to escape with only a caution, a decision that infuriated the visiting players & bench & when a Chelmsford supporter threatened the referee, the game was stopped, albeit with only 10 seconds left to play.

Team: Rhodes, Bultitude (Fulker 54), Hood-Wright, Wright (Garnham 45), Salisbury, Kempson, Morphew, Hutchings (Nicklin 64), Severy, Tatum & Hutton

Next Sunday, Woodbridge play host to Tiptree in the Eastern Junior Alliance, but before then the Ridgeons Youth League team play at home to near-neighbours on Thursday evening.
