Woodbridge Town’s second string crashed to their second successive defeat in the top of the table clash with Thetford on Saturday.

Missing a number of players due to 1st team call-ups & school holidays it was a vastly different team from the one, which won 3-1 in the reverse fixture earlier in the season & this time around it was Thetford who ran out easy winners.

Woodbridge began the game in positive fashion & Ben Garnham whistled an effort inches past the top corner from 20 yards, but this was to be their only effort at goal in a one-sided 1st half.
There were three escapes around the Woodbridge goal in quick succession as firstly Tom Ross tipped one header wide & then two other headers were off target. It was no surprise when the visitors found the back of Ross’ net with a curled shot in 20th minute & equally no shock when Mo Rahman was caught in possession 15 minutes later & Thetford made the extra body count forcing the ball in at the 2nd attempt, despite calls for offside – correctly, the goal stood!

The 2nd half began in the same fashion & within 5 minutes a reckless tackle by Carl Widdowson gifted Thetford a penalty, which was hit through Ross. It could have been 4-0 moments later but with extra bodies again, Thetford wasted a golden opportunity with a sloppy cross. With the game all but over, Thetford ‘eased off the gas’ & the home team finally began to pass the ball around.
While Thetford had been by far & away the better team, Ben Garnham was the game’s outstanding player & he single-handedly took the game to the visitors. His volley was blocked by the keeper, his pass gave Josh Mayhew the chance to pull a goal back, but after rounding the keeper, Mayhew took too long & allowed the keeper to recover & smother the shot & then Garnham’s solo run took him past 4 tackles & after playing in substitute James Churchill he should have been rewarded with a simple tap-in, but Churchill’s return pass was too soft. Ben Hutton also headed a corner wide.
It was only after Danny Tatum had limped off & Woodbridge were left with 10 men that the home team got on the score-sheet as JACK SEVERY beat the keeper at the near post following good approach-play by David Kempson. Even then Churchill should have done better with Severy’s cross, but shot over, while Thetford could have added further gloss to their win, but missed a good chance in the dying seconds.

Team: Ross, Fulker (Salisbury), Baalham, Garnham, Widdowson, Kempson, Mayhew, Rahman (Churchill), Hutton, Tatum & Severy.

The Reserves are back in action on Tuesday evening when they travel to Diss & hopefully there will be a positive response after such a disappointing team effort?
