Woodbridge has the wind, rain & snow at their
back throughout the 1st half, but looked like
they would struggle to make the most of the
advantage in the early stages as they made
little impact on the Wanderers defence.
Only Matt Oxbrow had really threatened to score,
forcing a goal-line block from his close range
effort before he was fouled on the edge of the
penalty area & BEN GARNHAM saw the keeper out of
position & curled the free-kick into the bottom
corner. Danny Tatum then had two great chances
to increase the lead but hit his shot straight
at the keeper following Craig Jennings’ through
ball & then repeated the feat when Jack Severy
found him with a delightful cross. Severy became
the next to miss as he volleyed over the bar
from close range.
Little had been seen from the visitors in the
1st half in the face of the weather & some
decent attacking football, but with the
conditions more in their favour they came
mightily close to scoring on three separate
occasions only to be denied by last-ditch
tackles or blocks from Ted Nichols, Carl
Widdowson & Arran Sheppard. A header & a far
post volley both went inches over the Woodbridge
bar, while Tom Ross & his defence dealt
admirably with high balls swirling around in the
penalty area.
It was far from one-way traffic though as
Garnham nearly added to his goal with a 25
yarder which flew inches wide, Josh Mayhew hit
the keeper when well-placed & Oxbrow fired over
at full-stretch from yet another Severy cross.
Team: Ross, Nichols, Kempson, Oxbrow, Widdowson,
Sheppard, Mayhew (Salisbury), Garnham, Jennings
(Hutton, Tatum (Wright) & Severy.
The win leaves Woodbridge top of the division
again 3 points clear of Walsham Le Willows, but
with only 3 games left to play as opposed to
Walsham’s 5. There is a double-header for the
reserves next week as they host Debenham on
Saturday 29th March & Needham Market on Tuesday
1st April.
