 PRE SEASON FRIENDLY MATCH

Cornard United 1 Woodbridge Town 1
Thursday 10th July 2008
Luke Read scored an 83rd minute equalizer as Woodbridge Town kicked off their pre season programme with their annual visit to Cornard.

With many players away, unavailable or simply not ready for competitive action, it was the ideal opportunity to look at a number of the new signings & trialists as well as some of the youngsters, who showed promise in the Youth Team & Reserves last season.

The 1st half was played at a frantic pace with very little in the way of quality, although Woodbridge slightly shaded the possession, but rarely threatened the Cornard goal. Luke Read had the only real effort of note, forcing what was to prove to be the first of many top saves from the home keeper.

At the other end Cornard were kept largely at bay, but Gary Rose had to be alert to make a close range save, as did Stefan Marsh who headed one ball off the line, while the home team had a goal ruled out for offside.

The 2nd half was far more entertaining as Woodbridge took the game to their hosts only to be constantly denied by the home keeper, Moyes. He produced three outstanding saves from Josh Mayhew & also denied Danny Tatum, David Kempson, Rob Bird & Craig Stuart.

In between these chances came a 63rd minute goal for Cornard, courtesy of a powerful volley from the edge of the penalty area, in what was the only real effort at the Woodbridge goal throughout the 2nd half.

However, Woodbridge did finally find a way past Moyes when Mark Roper slid a pass into the path of LUKE READ & he struck a low angled shot inside the far post.

In the dying minutes Woodbridge broke away three times through the teenage trio of Jack Severy, Josh Mayhew & Danny Tatum, but each time the move broke down with the final ball.

Of the new players, Craig Stuart was undoubtedly the pick with a commanding performance at the heart of the defence, where he hardly lost a header or a tackle all game.

Goalkeeper, Gary Rose was not tested too often, but dealt with everything comfortably & correctly. Robbie Smythe gave an energetic performance at right back, Robert Bird proved to be a lively attacking midfielder, who enjoyed a good first outing in Woodbridge colours, Sami Kriikulla, over from Finland chased & harried defenders, but will benefit from further match action, having not played for 6 months & Tom Lloyd came on for the final half an hour & impressed everybody with an enthusiastic display.

Woodbridge Team: Gary Rose, Robbie Smythe, Ben Miller (David Kempson 63), Joe Yearly (Mark Roper 50), Stefan Marsh (Tom Lloyd 63), Craig Stuart, Luke Read, Liam Hillard, Sami Kriikulla (Jack Severy 58), Josh Mayhew & Robert Bird (Danny Tatum 58)
