Woodbridge Town 2 Wroxham 1
Saturday 26th April 2008
WOODBRIDGE Town ensured their Premier Division status for another season thanks to this win - their first in nine games - against third-placed Wroxham.

Although the visitors were not at full strength, it was nonetheless a well-deserved victory on the balance of play, especially the second half, when Mark Roper struck a superb winner for the Woodpeckers.

This result means that Woodbridge have now beaten Needham Market, drawn with Soham (who equalised three minutes into injury time!) and taken four points off Wroxham this season, leaving everyone connected with the club scratching their heads as to why they have struggled at times against other sides in the league.

Wroxham started brightly and the unmarked Andy Keys sent a header from a free-kick straight at Marcus Garnham before Lee Gilman fired wide.

Ben Thompson got in behind the defence after a slip by Ben Miller but Marcus Garnham blocked his initial shot and then saved his follow-up effort.

Jack Severy, who had made his Ridgeons League debut in the defeat at Harwich four days earlier, put over a good cross from the left after 13 minutes and Paul Hart should have done better but could not keep his header down.

However, Woodbridge went ahead just two minutes later when Severy put over a low cross from the left that Wroxham keeper Andrew Jackson, under no apparent pressure, fumbled and the ball fell at the feet of Luke Read to prod home.

The lead did not even last a minute as Thompson hooked a shot against a post and although Marcus Garnham saved his second effort from the rebound it fell kindly to Danny White to shoot home.

Thompson, Keys and Alex Notman, the former Manchester United and Norwich City player, all sent efforts sailing over the crossbar as Wroxham looked the more likely to add a second, but it was Woodbridge's Jon Bickers who came closest, seeing his shot on the turn saved down at the foot of his left-hand post by Jackson at the expense of a corner.

Player-manager Damian Hilton did not appear for the second half and without his commanding presence in the centre of the defence the visitors looked vulnerable.

Bickers squandered a good opportunity to put Woodbridge ahead in the 58th minute, racing on to a well-judged through ball by Hart but not getting enough height on his intended lob over the keeper and Jackson saved comfortably.

The second period was devoid of any serious goalmouth action, but Woodbridge had the better of the exchanges and sealed all three points with 13 minutes remaining.

A swift break after defending a Wroxham set piece saw Aaron Churchyard play the ball over the top of the Wroxham defence and Mark Roper, who had burst forward from the back, took it on his chest before volleying a splendid dipping shot over Jackson from 25 yards.

Roper then flashed a powerful volley wide in the 83rd minute after a free-kick had been headed clear to him as Woodbridge ended the match in control.

Woodbridge Town: Marcus Garnham, Simon Peddie, Grant Monaghan, Aaron Churchyard, Mark Roper, Ben Miller, Luke Read (sub David Kempson 87 mins), Paul Hart, Jon Bickers, Lee O'Neill (sub Ted Nichols 90 mins), Jack Severy (sub Craig Jennings 65 mins). Unused sub: Arran Sheppard.
