The Woodpeckers were guilty of gifting all four
goals to Wanderers, who took full advantage of
their hosts' generosity, before defending
solidly to protect their lead.
Wanderers, who fielded their
reserve team, raced into a three-goal lead
inside the opening 20 minutes, with late
arrivals - the match kicked off at 7.30pm rather
than the usual 7.45pm start time - missing the
first goal as Callum Moran intercepted a poor
goal kick by Marcus Garnham to run on and score.
It was 2-0 in the 13th minute
when Mark Roper's attempted clearance looped
into the air and as Woodbridge defenders stood
off Moran reacted first to knock the ball across
the face of goal and former Woodbridge striker
Lewis Culf applied the final touch.
Adam Potter fired over the bar
following an excellent through ball by Sam
Taylor as Wanderers continued to call the tune
against an out-of-sorts Woodbridge side and it
was no surprise when they added a third after 20
minutes.
Last defender Ted Nichols made
a hash of his clearance, hitting the ball
straight to Taylor, who advanced on goal before
slipping the ball wide of Marcus Garnham. Culf
was off target in the 38th minute after a
misdirected free-kick by Jon Bickers almost let
Wanderers in for another and two minutes later
Liam Hillyard, making his first appearance for
Woodbridge since the turn of the year, forced
Peter Stephens into a diving save low to his
right after a good run forward by Nichols.
Whatever was said at half time
in the Woodbridge dressing room about getting
back into the game early in the second half went
unheeded as they contrived to concede a fourth
goal three minutes after the resumption, Roper
playing a pass across his own goal straight to
Potter who gleefully accepted the chance.
Roper gave Woodbridge a
lifeline three minutes later, confidently
scoring from the spot after Danny Tatum was
tripped following a good exchange of passes with
Luke Read.
Despite virtually camping in
the Wanderers' half thereafter Woodbridge were
unable to break down their well-organised
defence, with their best effort on goal being a
shot from Read that Stephens tipped over the
bar.
Ben Hutton came on as an 80th
minute substitute for his first taste of senior
action and five minutes later Woodbridge scored
their second, Paul Hart's well-struck shot
proving too hot to hold for Stephens and Pete
Richardson reacted first and steered the ball
goalwards for fellow substitute Josh Mayhew to
apply the finishing touch.
However, it was all too
little, too late on a night when Woodbridge, who
fielded a mix of first team and reserve players,
were definitely second best to Wanderers.
