Relegation rivals Wivenhoe Town moved to within
a point of Woodbridge with their first win of
the season, whilst Woodbridge suffer defeat to
Ely City.
The Woodpeckers and Robins failed to put a shot
on target during the first half at Notcutts
Park. Tom Trevivian sending a shot well wide
following a corner and Josh Mayhew's free kick
sailing over the bar were Woodbridge's only
attempts, whilst Richard Chadwick hitting the
side netting and fellow striker Robbie Mason
shooting across goal saw the visitors fare no
better.
The spectators
only topic for half time debate seemed likely to
be the visitors inclination to foul the home
team and complain to the referee when penalised,
which eventually brought Mason a caution. Until
the 36th minute. A bouncing ball in the
Woodbridge penalty area struck Gavin Frost on
the arm and a harsh penalty kick was awarded,
which Mason dispatched to earn the Robins a 1-0
lead at the interval. Frost was cautioned for
expressing his disappointment with the decision
to the referee.
Woodbridge
supporters will have lost count of the number of
times this season their team has conceded
immediately after half time, with this match no
being exception. Town failed to clear a ball
travelling across their 18 yard line which fell
to Owen Kessack who curled a well placed shot
wide of Adam Wilson, going in off the far post
to double the Robins lead.
The Town keeper
retired through injury minutes later but his
replacement Lewis Rhodes was was never tested in
the remaining half hour. Woodbridge only once
came close to reducing the deficit, Frost sent a
diagonal pass to Seb Brimstead who held onto the
ball long enough to penetrate the penalty area
beating Ely keeper with his shot, but not the
corner of crossbar and post.
